My Mother's Legacy consists of a 1,000 line poem burned into the bottom of 1,000 wooden bowls. On each bowl is written a line that reflects a memory, advice, or remark I attribute to my mother. The bowls are piled onto tables, where they can be picked up and read at random. As each bowl is lifted it reminds me of my mother's habit of turning things over to see where they were made.

I began this project to try and collect in one written list everything I could remember about my mother. These memories which now constitute My Mother's Legacy not only give form and structure to those memories but connect them through the physical act of lifting to read or, when reading through the written version, an entire image of my mother as a person. Something her premature death at 47 didn't leave me with.

My Mother's Legacy was done in part while a resident at the MacDowell Colony and with financial support from a 1995 Sculpture Fellowship from the New England Foundation for the Arts and Massachusetts Cultural Council.
