Karl Frederick Haendel

I began to photograph my mother in 1993 when, after two years of remission, her breast cancer metastasized. This work is from the final three months of life when we came to terms with the reality of death. I still feel the grief, emptiness, and loss that I confronted when I made these photographs. I hope that something of the most beautiful and caring woman I have ever known is preserved through them. She died on November 29, 1995.
